From part time on the shop floor to Accounting Manager for the entire company – Helen Burridge’s rise through the Gardiner Haskins ranks has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Known amongst colleagues for her bubbly personality and being an approachable mother figure to her team, she is well loved and respected amongst the workforce. Never one to shy away from fun or from helping out, come Christmas, Helen can be found dressed as Mrs Clause and helping out at events – happily serving cheese and wine to customers at our events.
Helen began her Gardiner Haskins career with a role in the Bristol decorating department in 1988. With two young children to look after, she worked part time, a few evenings a week before soon moving to the Soft Furnishings department. Eventually, Helen wanted to utilise her skills from previous job as an accounts assistant and applied for a new vacancy as kitchen administrator. After moving back to office work and at the age of 34, she enrolled at night school to expand her skills – taking her A levels as well as RSA Accounting qualifications. With these new qualifications under her belt Helen moved to a role in the accounts office -moving around to various roles in the department before ‘three or four jobs later’ she was promoted to the senior role of Company Accountant – managing the entire accounts department. The promotion, Helen says, is her biggest achievement to date and reveals that such an accolade ‘really makes you feel appreciated’.
On her multiple roles in the company Helen says: “Working in so many roles, working on the shop floor and in the office, gives you an insight into the company as a whole. I understand if someone is struggling in a role and how I can help.”
With such a responsible job Helen appreciates being able to get involved with other things going on outside of the accounts department – such as Christmas events, charity events etc. With such a great deal of experience and after almost 30 years it is evident Helen thoroughly enjoys her role and has no plans to work anywhere other than Gardiner Haskins again, ending her story by saying:
“My dream is to actually retire from Gardiners”
Gardiners Director Steve Whitcombe, who has worked alongside Helen for many years says: Helen performs a pivotal role in the accounts department which sees her determination and passion help keep the wheels of business turning. We all know Helen is very proud of her achievements at Gardiner Haskins which is something we all share with her.
